Is Tide safe? What FSCS protection actually covers here

Tide is a business financial platform, not a bank in its own name — but its current accounts are provided by ClearBank, a UK-authorised bank, which is what brings FSCS deposit protection into the picture. Here's exactly how the arrangement works, what it covers and where safeguarding takes over instead.

Start with the structure: Tide the platform, ClearBank the bank

Tide describes itself as a business financial platform. Tide Platform Limited is authorised and regulated by the FCA as an e-money institution, not as a bank in its own right — that permission covers how Tide runs its app, cards and services. But the business current account itself, the one that holds your everyday trading balance, is provided by ClearBank Ltd, a UK-authorised bank regulated by the PRA and the FCA, using ClearBank's own sort code (04-06-05). That distinction matters because it is ClearBank's banking licence — not Tide's e-money permission — that determines whether FSCS deposit protection applies to your balance.

You can check both firms' permissions for yourself on the FCA register. Understanding which entity actually holds your money is the single most useful thing to do before deciding how much cash to keep in any business account, Tide included.

FSCS deposit protection vs safeguarding: the actual difference

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme protects eligible deposits held with UK-authorised banks, building societies and credit unions, up to £120,000per eligible depositor, per authorised bank, if that bank fails. This is the same current limit — raised from the long-standing £85,000 figure — that applies to Starling, Monzo and every high-street bank. Because Tide's current account money sits with ClearBank, a UK-authorised bank, eligible balances in a Tide business current account qualify for this protection in exactly the same way. Always check the FSCS website for the current figure and eligibility rules, since both can change.

Two caveats matter more than the headline figure. First, the FSCS limit applies per depositor per bank, so if you also hold other balances with ClearBank directly or through another ClearBank-powered provider, those balances aggregate towards the same £120,000 cap rather than each getting their own limit. Second, not every pound that passes through a Tide product is necessarily sitting as a ClearBank deposit — some e-money balances (for example, funds held transiently in certain Tide product flows) are protected instead by "safeguarding": Tide keeps customer money separate from its own operating money, typically in segregated accounts at authorised banks or in safe, liquid assets, rather than as an FSCS-eligible bank deposit. Safeguarding is a real and regulated protection, but it is a different legal mechanism to FSCS compensation, and it does not carry a fixed government-backed guarantee figure in the way FSCS does.

Where ClearBank fits in

ClearBank Ltd is a UK-authorised bank, and it is ClearBank — not Tide — that actually holds Tide business current account deposits, issues the account's sort code (04-06-05) and unique account number, and would be the institution an FSCS claim was made against if it ever failed. This is a genuine banking relationship, not a marketing gesture: it is the reason a Tide current account balance is eligible for FSCS deposit protection up to £120,000 at all, in a way that a pure e-money balance held only under safeguarding would not be. The precise structure, including which balances and products it covers, is set out in Tide's own terms and conditions and on ClearBank's own site — read both if you plan to hold a large balance and want the authoritative wording rather than our summary.

What this means for the savings side of the referral bonus

Part of the REFER200 offer involves funding a Tide business savings product to unlock £125 of the bonus. Savings products are sometimes structured through a different partner bank from the everyday ClearBank current account, and the FSCS position — including which bank the aggregation rules point to — can differ as a result. Don't assume the protection on your everyday ClearBank balance and the protection on any savings balance sit with the same institution; check the specific product page at the time you fund it, because these arrangements can change.

Is any of this a reason not to use Tide?

Not really, on the current facts. Eligible deposits in a Tide business current account attract the same £120,000 FSCS protection, via ClearBank, as eligible deposits at Starling, Monzo or a high-street bank. The genuine nuance is aggregation and eligibility, not a lower or absent limit: if you hold a very large balance, it is worth checking whether any of it sits outside the ClearBank current account structure, and whether other balances you hold with ClearBank would push you towards the aggregate cap. For most small businesses holding working capital rather than seven-figure reserves, that distinction rarely bites in practice.

What we'd push back on is either extreme: marketing that implies no caveats apply at all, and outdated claims — including our own past wording — that Tide balances are simply "not FSCS protected." Neither is accurate. Read Tide's own terms for the current detail, and our full review for the practical side of running the account day to day.

A note on accuracy and who refer200 is

refer200 is an independent publisher and a Tide referral partner, not Tide itself, not a bank and not FCA-authorised. This page was reviewed by an ACCA-qualified accountant and the regulatory detail — including the current £120,000 FSCS limit, the ClearBank arrangement and the safeguarding rules that apply outside it — was checked against Tide's and ClearBank's published terms and the FCA and FSCS websites on 29 August 2026. Partner banks and product structures can change; treat the primary sources linked above as the final word over anything summarised here.

Frequently asked questions

Eligible deposits can be, yes. Tide itself is an FCA-authorised e-money institution rather than a bank, but Tide business current accounts are provided by ClearBank Ltd, a UK-authorised bank (sort code 04-06-05). Because the money sits in an account with ClearBank, eligible deposits are covered by the FSCS deposit protection scheme up to £120,000 per eligible depositor, per bank — the same current limit that applies to a licensed bank like Starling or Monzo. The word "eligible" is doing real work here: cover depends on FSCS eligibility rules and on balances not being aggregated above the limit with other money you hold at ClearBank — see the sections below.
