Tide vs Zempler Bank: acceptance, cash and credit-building compared

Zempler Bank (formerly Cashplus) built its name on accepting businesses other banks turn away and handling cash well. Tide built its name on being free, fast and stacked with invoicing tools. Here is who each one is actually built for.

Zempler Bank spent years as Cashplus before rebranding, and the name change did not alter what it does well: it holds a full UK banking licence, it accepts a wider range of applicants than many digital-first competitors, and it is built around businesses that actually handle cash — market traders, tradespeople, hospitality, and directors who have struggled to get accepted elsewhere. Tide occupies different territory entirely: a free, app-first account aimed at electronically paid sole traders, freelancers and small limited companies who want invoicing and expense tools bundled in at no monthly cost.

These are not really competing for the same customer in most cases, which makes this one of the more genuinely useful comparisons on this site rather than a coin-flip. We lean towards Tide for the majority of businesses that read this page — paid mostly by card or transfer, wanting a free account with built-in admin tools — and we should say plainly that we earn a commission from Tide links here and nothing from Zempler.

Who actually gets accepted

This is the question that matters most for anyone who has already been declined somewhere else, and it is where the two providers genuinely diverge rather than just packaging the same thing differently.

Tide business owner holding a Tide card
Zempler is built around businesses that touch cash and harder credit histories; Tide is built around electronically paid businesses that want admin tools bundled free.

Zempler built its entire reputation, first as Cashplus and now under its current name, on saying yes to businesses that mainstream banks and several fintech challengers say no to: sole traders and directors with poor or thin personal credit histories, newly formed companies with no trading track record, and sectors that other providers treat as higher risk. That is a real, specific strength, not marketing spin — it is the reason Zempler has built a loyal customer base among businesses that struggled to get banked at all.

Tide's onboarding is fast for most applicants — same-day approval is common in our testing — but it is not aimed at the same acceptance profile. If your company has been refused a business account elsewhere, or a director's personal credit file is the sticking point, Zempler is worth applying to before assuming no provider will take you.

Cash handling and everyday running costs

Zempler's tiers build cash access in progressively: its entry-level plan carries a small charge per cash withdrawal, while higher tiers reduce or waive that fee as part of a paid monthly subscription. Tide charges £2.50 to deposit cash at the Post Office up to £500, then a percentage on anything above that (0.99% on Free, 0.5% on paid plans), 3% at PayPoint, and £1 per GBP ATM withdrawal.

Take a tradesperson who is handed roughly £300 in cash most weeks and withdraws a similar amount for materials. On Tide's Free plan that is £2.50 a week in deposit fees plus £1 per ATM withdrawal — call it £14 a month before card spend. Depending on which Zempler tier you choose, a monthly subscription with reduced or free cash handling could come out cheaper once volume is regular, or more expensive if cash is only occasional. The break-even point depends entirely on frequency and the specific tier, so run your own numbers against both providers' current published fee schedules rather than trusting either "from £0" headline.

Creditbuilder and credit history

Zempler's Creditbuilder is a genuinely distinctive add-on: it is designed to help a business with a thin or damaged credit history build one over roughly a year of account activity, reported to credit reference agencies. It is explicitly not a quick fix, and Zempler is upfront about that, but for a newly incorporated company or a director rebuilding after a rocky patch, it is a feature Tide simply does not offer in the same form. Tide's Max plan includes credit-score insights, which is informational rather than a structured credit-building programme.

Regulation and deposit protection

Zempler holds its own UK banking licence, so eligible deposits are FSCS-protected in the ordinary way. Tide's current accounts are provided by ClearBank, a UK-authorised bank, using sort code 04-06-05; eligible deposits held there can attract FSCS protection up to £120,000, subject to eligibility rules and aggregation with any other balances you hold with the same bank. Our guide to Tide and FSCS protection covers exactly which balances qualify, and you can check both firms on the FCA Register.

The REFER200 partner code

Tide has an ordinary customer refer-a-friend route, and separately a partner code that pays noticeably more. REFER200 is that partner code, worth up to £200 in total: £75 for opening the account and spending £100 on the Tide card within 30 days, plus £125 for depositing at least £5,000 into Tide Instant Saver within seven days and holding it there for a month. Zempler's own promotions vary and should be checked directly on its site. Offer terms checked 29 August 2026.

The verdict

Choose Zempler if you have been declined a business account elsewhere, you handle meaningful amounts of cash every week, or you specifically want a structured credit-building product attached to your account. Those are real, specific needs and Zempler answers them directly.

Choose Tide if you are a UK sole trader, freelancer or small limited company paid mostly by card or bank transfer, you want invoicing, expense tracking and a savings pot bundled into a free plan, and you want the account open the same day. That covers most of the businesses reading this page, and it is why Tide, collected via the REFER200 partner code, remains our starting recommendation — while acknowledging that for cash-heavy or harder-to-place businesses, Zempler is the more honest fit.
